On Saturday Yoni and I just barely made it to the farmer’s market – now that I work early in the morning from Monday to Friday, I really don’t want to get up early on the weekend. And this Saturday we made brunch together first, so it was an even later start than usual. The Durham farmer’s market has surprisingly early hours; they’re open from 8 a.m. till noon. I can’t be the only one who thinks they should stay open longer, can I? The Philly farmer’s market was from 10 to 2, and I always managed to get there when lots of vendors had lots of stuff. So, this time I ended up with some eggplant, tomatoes, and green beans. No fruit! After the market we wandered over to the Daisy Cakes trailer:
The trailer itself, an old Airstream, is really cute. In fact, everything about Daisy Cakes seemed so right to me: a cute trailer selling delicious sounding cupcake flavors, fair trade coffee, and breakfast treats. Friendly proprietors. Even a little seating area!
But then we got the cupcakes.
I got a pink lemonade (lemon cupcake with raspberry buttercream) and Yoni got the special coffee cupcake. And oh lordy, I hate to say this, but they were SO BAD. My cupcake was not only extremely dense and slightly oversalty, it was also gummy. Yikes! The raspberry buttercream was quite okay, but with a cake base that terrible, I couldn’t eat it. Yoni’s coffee cupcake was much more muffin than cupcake, and waaay too sweet. Again, the topping was nice, but didn’t make the cupcake itself more edible. And if my husband won’t eat a cupcake, that’s really saying something. We tossed them on the way back to the car. I’m wondering if we just happened to go there on an “off” day, and if I should try again. I certainly have off days at my job. Fortunately for me, I don’t have to sell my mistakes, but I certainly have in the past when I was working for myself and couldn’t afford the loss. So I might try Daisycakes one more time. If they’re still bad after a second try, well, I give up.
Or I make myself a pie, like I did this Saturday after my disappointing cupcake experience; peach-blueberry with vanilla ice cream made it all better.
