I'm a baker, thinking about opening my own bakery sometime in the near future. For now, I'm working at Duke University in Durham, NC, as a pastry chef. I haven't started yet, but I'm actually pretty excited about making brioche donuts for lawyers and priests. I like chocolate as a component but not as the main event, and I'd rather eat a piece of coconut cream pie than a napoleon or an eclair. Unrelated to my job, I have half a bachelor's degree in English; I started when I was 25, and hope I'll graduate by the time I'm 40. No rush. I'd like to be a better writer, but I'm not entirely convinced that I can learn that in college. I was born in the United States, but I grew up in the Netherlands Antilles. I moved back to the U.S. at age 17 and I've lived here ever since. I like it okay, I suppose. But sometimes I think about moving to Europe in an ignorant, romantic way. Then I realize that my French is pretty bad, and my Dutch is terrible. Hooray for living in a country where no English speaker ever has to learn another language! I'm lazy. But trying to learn a bit of Spanish.
