So, first, a word to the wise: Dale’s Indian Cuisine: NO. Milkshakes from Rockwood Filling Station: YES.
It’s been over two weeks since I moved here. I don’t really feel settled in, and I’m strangely homesick for Philadelphia, if mostly for the food. Well, and the friends I left behind, because I haven’t met many people here yet, and my job doesn’t start till the 19th. I have, however, made it to both the Raleigh and Durham farmer’s markets. I definitely like the Durham farmer’s market better; the produce I got there was far superior to what I got in Raleigh. I bought a lot of blueberries at the Raleigh market, to make this cobbler:
I know, it’s a crappy picture, but you know what? The cobbler sucked. The blueberries I got at the Raleigh farmer’s market weren’t very good. I used my standard cobbler recipe from the Best Recipe cookbook, which involves cooking the berries in the oven for a while, then adding the biscuit dough. But these berries…they were hatin’. They just never got soft at all. They were somehow solid and mealy at the same time. Boo. But then I went to the Durham farmer’s market and made up for it all with FIGS! And fresh fig-ginger jam!
So now I just need to make some friends, so I have a reason to use this fig jam in a pastry!
